Hi there,
My name is Alicia. I am coming from a French Caribbean island called Guadeloupe. You’re reading this today because I would love to introduce you to a piece of the caribbean culture through my soca dance workshops!
What’s soca ?
Soca is a very popular music style originating from Trinidad and Tobago. It has in the meantime spread in all Caribbean islands where it is one of the most beloved music style. Soca is deeply rooted in the history of Caribbean carnivals. It is the typical music you will hear if you ever got the chance to take part in one of them.
How do I dance on soca ?
Soca music is usually danced by what we call “whining”. Whining is the action of rotating your waist. And it might surprise some, but both mean and women whine in the Caribbean !
Content of the class
My workshop is completely begginer friendly and meant to build on techniques in order to get better. So don’t be afraid if you have never tried it before.
During this class, you will:
- Learn more about where soca is coming from
- Learn simple whining techniques to practice in class and at home
- Get familiar with soca music and it’s different sub-genres
- Feel the contagious positive energy of soca music
Everybody is welcome ! However please note that most of my choreographies will be very feminine.
Do I need to bring something ?
What you wear makes a big difference when you are trying to whine properly ! I suggest a booty short or some loose trousers so that your waist can express freely :)
If possible, please bring a small rag (tiny towel) or a small flag with you. But don’t worry, it’s not problem if you don’t have any !
Do not forget to bring some water with you.
And don’t forget your water ;)
